With proper care, a tooth that has received root canal treatment can last as long as any other natural tooth. In some situations, however, a tooth may not heal as expected or may develop new problems months or even years after the initial procedure. When this occurs, endodontic retreatment may be recommended to give the tooth another chance to heal.
To begin retreatment, the endodontist will reopen the tooth to reach the previous filling material. The material is carefully removed to allow access to the root canals. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, and examined thoroughly. Once the canals are properly treated, they are refilled and sealed, and a temporary filling is placed.
You will then need to return to your dentist as soon as possible to have a new crown or restoration placed. This final restoration protects the tooth and restores full function.
