After Endodontic Treatment

After Completion of Endodontic Treatment

Your endodontic therapy is now finished. The root canal has been permanently sealed, but the outer surface currently has a temporary filling. A permanent restoration must be placed to protect the tooth from fracture or decay. Please contact your restorative dentist to schedule this appointment. A detailed report of your treatment will be sent to their office. Your care includes a follow-up visit to check healing, which takes only a few minutes and is provided at no additional charge. Please schedule this follow-up within the next month.

Your tooth is more fragile immediately after treatment. Avoid chewing on that side until your dentist has completed the core build-up and final restoration, typically a crown. If the tooth requires additional support, a post and core may be recommended. Your restorative dentist and endodontist will determine the best option for protecting the tooth.

Are There Any Potential Issues After Treatment?

  • Lower teeth and nerve irritation. There is a small chance of nerve irritation during procedures involving lower back teeth. Because the roots may be close to the nerve supplying the lip, chin, and gums, you may notice tingling, altered sensation, or temporary numbness once anesthesia wears off. These symptoms usually resolve over days, weeks, or months. Permanent changes are rare.
  • Upper teeth and sinus involvement. Upper teeth sit close to the sinuses, and in some cases, treatment may create a temporary opening between the tooth and sinus. This typically heals on its own. If it occurs, you will be given specific instructions, such as avoiding blowing your nose for several days and sneezing with your mouth open to prevent pressure. If you sense a complication after surgery, please contact us.
  • Post-operative infections. Occasionally, an infection may develop afterward. This usually requires a brief office visit and may be treated with a short course of antibiotics. Additional follow-up procedures are rarely needed.
