Some minor soreness in the area is normal after your root canal. It is common for the tooth to feel tender for 2–3 days after treatment, and in some situations, the tooth and surrounding tissues may remain sensitive for a few weeks.
The three most typical causes of discomfort are:
Soreness in the jaw joint from keeping your mouth open
Tenderness in the muscles near the injection site
Gum irritation from placement of the rubber dam
These symptoms are usually managed with over-the-counter medication:
600 mg ibuprofen (3 Advil, Motrin, or generic tablets) every 6 hours for the next 2 days
OR, if you cannot take ibuprofen:
1000 mg acetaminophen (2 extra-strength Tylenol or equivalent) every 6–8 hours for 2 days
In most cases, this is enough to relieve discomfort. If it is not helping, please contact our office so we can assist you.
If you were prescribed any medications, take them exactly as instructed by your doctor.
