Root Canal Therapy

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is one of the most commonly performed dental procedures, helping millions of patients each year. The goal of this treatment is to save a tooth that has been damaged by infection or inflammation within the pulp. By removing the affected tissue, cleaning the root canal space, and sealing it, the natural tooth can be preserved and continue functioning normally.

Inside each tooth is the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissue that help form the tooth during development. The pulp can become irritated or infected as a result of trauma, deep decay, cracks, or repeated dental procedures. Signs of pulp problems can include visible injury, swelling, sensitivity to temperature, or pain in the tooth or gums.

When these symptoms appear, root canal treatment is often recommended. During the procedure, the damaged pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable, and the treatment may require one or more visits depending on the condition of the tooth. Most cases have a high success rate, and patients are typically able to return to normal routines shortly after their appointment. If the tooth cannot be successfully treated, you will be informed during your consultation or as treatment progresses.

What happens after treatment?

Once your root canal is complete, a record of your treatment will be sent to your dentist. You should contact their office within a few weeks to arrange for the final restoration, which is needed to protect the tooth. Your dentist will determine the most appropriate type of restoration based on your specific case. Complications after root canal treatment are uncommon, but if any issues arise, our office is available to assist you. Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups help maintain the long-term health of the treated tooth.

How much will it cost?

The cost of root canal treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and which tooth is affected. In most situations, endodontic treatment is less expensive than extracting the tooth and replacing it with a bridge or implant, making it a cost-effective way to preserve your natural tooth.
